What is Feldenkrais?

The Feldenkrais Method® of movement is a practice of moving slowly and gently, to increase mind and body awareness. This process allows students to increase their understanding of movement and posture, and can have a profound effect on technique, musical expression, practice strategies and performance!

Awareness Through Movement

Awareness Through Movement or “ATM” lessons are similar to a body scan with the addition of gentle, mindful movements. Each movement is related to a function, such as walking, sitting and standing, or reaching with the arms. The lessons are exploratory, relaxing and fun! Read more here!

Why the Feldenkrais Method?

I began studying the Feldenkrais method after dealing with years of chronic, musculoskeletal pain. At the suggestion of a piano instructor, and after reading about “body mapping” in What Every Pianist Needs to Know About the Body, I decided to try a class. For me it was love at first class! The playful and slow paced directives allowed me to gain a sense of ease in movement that I had not found elsewhere. I continued my practice, and eventually sought out a training program. Now I am starting my own class, and am also working on developing Feldenkrais inspired materials for teachers. It is my hope that through this process we can assist ourselves and our students in becoming self directed learners and mindful, happy practicers! Check out this podcast from the Bulletproof Musician to see how cellist Uri Vardi uses Feldenkrais in his teaching and playing.
